Man gets death for killing pregnant wife

BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his four-month pregnant wife for dowry in capital’s Badda area in 2005. Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Judge Khadem Ul Qayes passed the order in presence of the convict Saidur Rahman alias Milton. The court also fined him Taka 50 thousand, in default, to suffer three months more behind bars. According to the case documents, Milton married Sharmin Sultana Hia in 2004.  He demanded Taka five lakh as dowry right after the marriage, Hia’s parents gave him Taka Two lakh. But Milton used to demand more money and at one point he sold 20 tolas of gold ornaments of Hia. On September 9, 2005, Milton strangled Hia to death. Milton after the killing surrendered before police and confessed his crime. Hia’s uncle Shahdat Hossain Sarker filed the case with Badda Police Station.

Chawkbazar fire case probe report on Oct 3

BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday set October 3 for submitting probe report in the case filed over devastating fire in capital’s Chawkbazar on February 20. Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Keshab Roy Chowdhury set the date as investigation officer failed to submit the report yesterday. A total of 71 people were killed and many more injured in the fire, which was originated from a building named Wahed Mansion. A local named Asif filed the case with Chawkbazar police station for causing loss of lives and properties by fire caused by negligence. According to the case documents, two owners of Wahed Mansion, Md Hasan and his brother Sohel alias Shahid rented their house as godown of chemical and flammable materials for making extra profit, in spite of knowing about the risk of fire accidents.

Probe report in FR Tower design forgery case Oct 13

BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday set October 13 to submit probe report in a case lodged against 23 persons over alleged forgery in the design of FR Tower, a high-rise in capital’s Banani area. Yesterday was fixed for submitting the report, but investigation officer (IO) and Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) deputy director Abu Bakar Siddique failed to submit the report. Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge KM Imrul Qayes then set the new date. A total of 27 people were killed and 70 others were injured in a devastating fire that engulfed the building on March 28. The matter of design forgery came into light as concerned officials were probing the fire incident.
