The concerned authorities will begin eviction drive against illegal land grabbers to protect rivers in Khulna from September 1. “Many rivers, canals and water bodies in Khulna region were occupied by land grabbers… eviction drive will begin to free rivers, canals and water bodies from land grabbers for ensuring normal flow of water,” an official of local administration told a meeting held recently.
At the meeting, speakers said many rivers are on the verge of dying as the land grabbers are constructing illegal structures on the banks of rivers as well as filling up canals and water bodies. It is urgent to knock down illegal structures built on the rivers for safeguarding environment through ensuring normal flow of water, they added.
Deputy Commissioner Md Helal Hossain urged all levels of the people to extend their cooperation to make the eviction drive successful for recovering illegally occupied lands on the rivers banks and other water bodies.
Local administration sources said 1,536 illegal structures built on both banks of the rivers and 26 canals in the city will be demolished.
