JU BCL man ‘beats up’ student

An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit allegedly beat up a student of the university for taking part in the ongoing movement against the corruption, unplanned development project on the campus. The victim is Sohayeb Ibne Masud, a first year student of International Relations department and also a residential student of Al Beruni hall.

The BCL activist is Saifur Rahman Sarkar, a 2nd year student of Public Health and Informatics department and also a residential student of Al Beruni hall. He is loyal to JU Chhatra League president Jewel Rana. The victim said that he was returning to the hall after taking part in a torch procession under the banner of 'Jahangirnagar against corruption' on Tuesday.

Masud said on that night, BCL activist Saifur Rahman called him and verbally abused him for taking part in the procession. At one stage, he assaulted him physically. The victim submitted a written complaint to the hall authority seeking justice. However, it was not impossible to reach the accused Saifur after taking several attempts.

When contacted, Provost of Al Beruni hall Associate Professor Ashraful Islam said that he received the complaint letter and will sit with the other tutor of the dormitory and will form a probe body in this regard. JU Acting Proctor ASM Firoj Ul Hasan acknowledging the incident said he had told the hall provost to investigate into the matter. If the hall provost wants any assistance, they will cooperate.

Earlier, the accused Saifur Rahman was expelled temporarily for ragging first year students of Public Health and Informatics department of the university.
