$822 million in remittance received in 23 days

The country received $821.72 million in remittance in the first 23 days of the current month of October, reports UNB. According to Bangladesh Bank statistics, four state-owned commercial banks -- Agrani, Janata, Rupali and Sonali - brought in $254.31 million from the expatriate Bangladeshis while four state-owned specialised banks obtained $10.82 million. Of the state-owned banks, Agrani Bank received $89.67 million, Sonali Bank $20.84 million, Janata Bank $70.09 million and Rupali Bank $13.26 million.
However, maximum remittance came through the private commercial banks who brought $547.77 million while the nine foreign banks only $8.82 million. Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) led the remittance earning in the private commercial banks as it received the highest remittance of $202.87 million, followed by National Bank Limited (NBL) with $38.94 million. Among other private banks who are in the leading positions in earning remittance include Uttara Bank ($31.92 million), Pubali Bank ($30.23 million), Dutch-Bangla Bank ($27.76 million), Bank Asia ($23.06 million), Trust Bank ($13.94 million), Prime Bank ($22.31 million), BRAC Bank ($16.77 million) and AB Bank ($15.50 million).
Like previous days, the NRB banks showed a poor performance in earning the remittance from the expatriates although the government allowed establishing these banks with high hope. Of the three NRB banks, NRB Bank received $0.15 million in remittance while NRB Commercial Bank got $0.10 million and NRB Global Bank received $0.03 million in from non-resident Bangladeshis during the period. Some new banks, including Modhumati and South Bangla Agriculture Bank, also showed poor performance in earning remittance in first 23 days of the current month. Modhumoti Bank received hardly any remittance while SBAB received only $0.01 million.
