Rohingyas among 3 killed in ‘gunfights’

Two suspected Rohingya drug peddlers and a murder accused were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in  Cox’s Bazar and Mymensingh yesterday. In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingyas were killed in a gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Hoaikong Urubunia Katakhal in Teknaf upazila early in the day. The deceased were identified as Sarker, 22, son of Syed Hossain of Kutupalong Rohingya camp; and Nur Alam, 30, son of Mohammad Ali of Muchni Rohingya camp in Teknaf.  A BGB-2 team raided the area after being tipped-off about smuggling of a large amount of yaba, said BGB-2 Deputy Commander Major Shariful Islam Jamaddar. The BGB members signalled a boat to stop on the Naf River. But the smugglers ignored the signal and opened fire, triggering a gunfight, he said. “Alam and Sarker were killed in the skirmish,” the BGB officer said. Later, BGB members recovered the bodies and sent them to the Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Fifty-thousand yaba pills, a gun, three cartridges and two sharp weapons were recovered from the spot. In Mymensingh, murder accused Eklash Uddin, 32, was killed in a gunfight with police in Gafargaon upazila early in the day, adds Our Correspondent.   Eklash was the prime suspect in a case filed with Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon for snatching away an auto-rickshaw after killing its driver Sujon Mia, 20, on July 27 night. Acting on a tip-off, detectives in support of Pagla Police Station raided Chakua area in Gafargaon to arrest Eklash and his cohorts. Sensing police presence, Eklash and his allies shot fires at the police, triggering a gunfight around 1.30am, said Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge (OC) of Detective Branch (DB) of Police in Mymensingh. Akanda was leading the raid.

While other gang members managed to flee, police found bullet-hit Eklash on the spot and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 3am, the OC added.  Police also recovered a pistol with one round of bullet and 200gm heroin from the spot.  Two policemen, sub-inspector Akram Hossain and Constable Eliash Uddin of DB, were injured during the incident and they were given treatment at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital.
