Overseas investment in China jumps 7.3% from January to July

According to statistics from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, China introduced 2 4 , 0 5 0 f o r e i g n - i n v e s t e d companies from January to July of 2019, utilizing 533.14 billion yuan (US$78.8 billion) in overseas investment, up 7.3 percent (3.6 percent if calculated in US dollars) over the previous year.

The structure of overseas investment in China continued to improve. According to Zhu Bing, deputy director of the Department of Foreign Investment Administration, Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the high-tech manufacturing and high-tech service industries maintained a high level of growth. In the first seven months of this year, overseas investment in China's high-tech industry grew by 43.1 year-on-year, accounting for 29.3 percent of total overseas investment. Specifically, in the high-tech manufacturing and high-tech service industries, the foreign investment actually utilized increased by 19 percent and 63.2 percent, respectively, year-on-year.

Geographically, inward foreign investment showed remarkable growth in eastern, central and western China, as well as in pilot free trade zones. In particular, during the first seven months this year, inward foreign investment increased by 25.2 percent year-on-year in western China. Overseas capital utilized by pilot free trade zones grew by 14.6 percent year-on-year, accounting for 14.2 percent of the national total.

Major sources of foreign investment also continued to rise. From January to July, Germany, South Korea, Japan and the Netherlands increased their investment in China by 72.4 percent, 69.7 percent, 12.6 percent and 14.3 percent, respectively. Compared to 2017, actual foreign investment from the European Union increased by 18.3 percent, and that from the countries along the Belt and Road increased by five percent from 2017 (including investment through free-trade ports)
