Minor girl ‘raped’ in Benapole

A nine-year-old girl was reportedly raped by a 53-year-old man in Sharsha upazila of Jashore on Tuesday while a man, accused of raping a seventh grader, was arrested from Khajura in Jhenidah Sadar upazila yesterday.

In Benapole, a nine-year-old girl was reportedly raped by a man at Colony Para in Sharsha upazila on Tuesday.

The victim’s father filed a case accusing Abdul Hamid Khandaker of rape, said Shukdeb Roy, officer-in-charge of Bagachra Police camp.

Locals said the victim went to Hamid’s house for playing in the afternoon. At one stage, he took the girl to his room and violated her.

Neighbours rushed in hearing the girl’s scream and rescued her but Hamid managed to flee.

“We’re trying to arrest the suspect,” the OC said.

Meanwhile, a man, accused of raping a seventh grader, was arrested from Khajura in Jhenidah Sadar upazila yesterday.

Police shot Badsha in the leg when he attacked them with a sharp weapon, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

The law enforcers raided the area acting on a tip-off to arrest him.

Badsha reportedly raped a class VII student of Khajura on August 13 when she had gone out of her home.

Her father filed a case at the Sadar Police Station.

One jailed for keeping drugs

A Chapainawabganj court here today sentenced one person to 15 years rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk. 50,000 or to suffer one year more jail in default in a narcotic control case.

Additional District and Session Judge Shawkat Ali gave this verdict in presence of the convicted person Abdul Jalil, 27, son of Rozbul Hoque of Charpanka Dasrashia village under Shibganj upazila.

According to the prosecution, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Abdul Jalil with 3,880 yaba tablets from a mango orchard at Alidanga village of Shibganj upazila on February 21, 2018. After investigation police submitted charge sheet to the court against Abdul Jalil on April 17, 2018.

After hearing the witnesses the court handed down the punishment yesterday.

8 Bangladeshis return after serving jail in India

Eight young Bangladeshi girls returned home through the Benapole checkpost on Tuesday night after serving two years in an Indian prison.

The Border Security Force (BSF) handed them over to Benapole Immigration Police and Border Guard Bangladesh through Petrapole, said Nayeb Subedar Atier Rahman of Benapole ICP BGB camp.

The girls have been identified as Mim Akter, 17, Moni Akter, 19, Rubina Khatun, 18, Rina Begum, 16, Mukta Akter, 19, Munni Akter, 22, Eti Khatun, 21 and Rexona Akter, 17. All of them are residents of Thakurgaon. They said they were lured to Kolkata two years ago with promises of good jobs. But police arrested them from Kolkata Rail Station.

Newly-wed couple found dead

UNB, Magura

A newly-wed couple apparently took their own lives at Raghobdair village in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night, barely three weeks after tying the knot.

The deceased were identified as Nirab Biswas, 20, and Sraboni Biswas, 18, of the village.

Locals said they killed themselves after failing to get consent of their parents. Police recovered the bodies at night and sent them to a local hospital for autopsy, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

An unnatural death case was filed in this connection.
