BNP to fall apart, says Hanif

Awami League (AL) acting general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday apprehended that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) would break into pieces in the near future. He also said that many leaders of the party are in queue to quit the BNP. He, however, made it clear that the AL does not believe in splitting any political party. Hanif was addressing a joint meeting with the assistant secretaries of the party’s central sub-committee at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in the city. The meeting was arranged to prepare plans for taking out a rally in the city on November 2.
The AL leader alleged that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been engaged in London for a long time in hatching conspiracies against the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
“But Khaleda Zia's evil designs against the government will never succeed. It'll only harm her own party. Intra-party divisions have already started to appear and they will eventually destroy the BNP,” he said.
About the resignation of BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, Hanif said many BNP leaders do not like the violent activities sponsored by their party, in collusion with Jamaat, under the pretext of organising political programmes. Many leaders continue to turn a blind eye to such terrorist activities to retain important ranks inside the party, he added.
“But I hope more conscientious BNP leaders, who don’t want to mix with the politics of Jamaat, will soon leave the party,” he said.
Referring to the comment of BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan, Hanif said the AL does not believe in destroying any political party. "It's part of the politics preached by the BNP’s founder Ziaur Rahman, who first started to split political parties," he added.
He also criticised Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) for its recent survey report, where it said the current Parliament has become a theatre for Muppet shows.
He alleged that the organisation is deliberately working to implement the agenda of a certain quarter. Referring to a comment of BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul that the resignation of Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury would not impact on the BNP, Hanif said that many Shamsher would leave the BNP soon.
“Mr. Fakhrul, just wait and see… Shamsher would not be last one. There are many other Shamsher waiting to say goodbye to BNP,” he said while addressing another programme organized by Bangladesh Krishok League in the city yesterday.
As Mirza Fakhrul is an honest person and he believes in the country’s Liberation War, he should have resigned from BNP before Shamsher Mobin, added Hanif.
In a separate programme, AL publicity and publications affairs secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said more BNP leaders were waiting to say goodbye to Khaleda Zia.
“Like the people, BNP leaders have lost their faith in the leadership of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. Shamsher Mobin has started the process and more BNP leaders are waiting to say goodbye to their party,” he added.  The AL leader was addressing a human chain in the city.
He said the BNP has become isolated from the people and become a platform for militants and terrorists.
UNB adds: Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said the resignation of BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury is a shocking outcome of BNP’s negative politics.
“Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury’s resignation, I think, is a frustrating exposure of BNP’s negative politics,” he said.
Talking to reporters at Chowmuhani in Noakhali, Quader, also a senior Awami League leader, said Mobin’s resignation is also an outcome of BNP’s internal conflict.
Mentioning that Mobin, a diplomat-turned politician, was actively involved in the BNP’s diplomatic drive and policy decision, Quader said he led the party in lodging complaints with foreigners against the government. “But now he couldn’t be there in the party.”
He alleged that having failed to make their movement a success, BNP is now making various evil efforts to tarnish Bangladesh’s image abroad.
