Ifad Autos Ltd is going to manufacture bodies for Ashok Leyland AC and non AC buses.
The new air-conditioned luxury and corporate buses will be available in the local market in the middle of the next year, Iftekhar Ahmed Tipu, chairman of Ifad Group, said this at the launching of the air conditioned luxury and corporate buses  at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital yesterday.
The company has already started building a factory in Dhamrai in the capital for manufacturing bodies of buses, he added.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was present on the occasion as the chief guest while Balachandran Venkat Subramaniam, senior vice president of Aftermarket Ashok Leyland, as special guest.
“Dhaka city needs large and environment-friendly vehicles in order to mitigate the pressure of unwanted vehicles on the streets. Private cars are playing on the streets like ants. If luxury buses can dominate the streets, the number of private cars will automatically decline. I appreciate the initiative taken by Ifad Autos,” said Obaidul Qader.
Elevated expresses or metro rails will not ease traffic until streets and footpaths can be made free from occupancy and the city corporation mayors should be more active in this regards, the minister added.
Ifad Group chairman said by dint of recent steps of the road transport and bridge minister, number and space of streets have increased that will create demands of large and luxury buses.
The country made vehicles will surely save foreign currency, he said.
IFAD Autos provides a full line of heavy duty trucks, buses and light cargo vehicles from Ashok Leyland of India as sole representative in Bangladesh since 1985.
