Walton 29th Bangladesh International Junior Tennis Championship Group-V organised by Bangladesh Tennis Federation and sponsored by Walton Group will begin November 2 at the National Tennis Complex (NTC) in the capital. Dhruv Sunish of India and Lisa Mayes of Australia have been drawn as top seeds in
the boys’ and girls’ singles respectively.
In fact the qualifying round of the tournament will be held on October 31 and November 1. The matches of the main draw will start on November 2 and the finals will take place on November 7. Tournament director Lutfur Rahman Shantu stated this at a press conference at the NTC yesterday. BTF vice-president Mohammad Ali Deen, general secretary Meer Khurshid Anwar and Walton Group first senior additional director FM Iqbal Bin Anwar Don also spoke on the occasion.
Over 100 players drawn from 16 countries are taking part in four events in this International Tennis Federation approved tournament. Lutfur Rahman in reply to a question said, “We have taken adequate security measures to hold the tournament in a smooth manner. We had an inter-ministerial meeting recently to discuss the security issue. Even the BTF had a separate meeting with law enforcing agencies. They have assured us to adequate security would be provided for the foreign players.” said Shantu.
“ We have also requested the law enforcing agencies to look after the security at the foreign players’ hotel at Purana Paltan in the city. Police force will also be deployed at the NTC and they would also escort the foreign players from hotel to tennis complex and back to hotel.” He further said that an eleven member Chinese Taipei team have already arrived in the city. “Rest of the foreign teams would reach here by November 1 to play directly into the main round.” India will field the maximum number of 32 players followed by Bangladesh with 14.
The participating are: Australia, Cambodia, China, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain, Germany, Hong Kong, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria and Bangladesh.
