A Pabna court yesterday placed a suspected leader of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) on a five-day remand in a case filed for the attempt on the life of church priest Luke Sarkar, reports UNB.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rezaul Karim passed the order after officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station Biman Kumar Dash, also investigation officer of the case, produced JMB regional commander Rakibul Islam alias Rakib alias Tauhid alias Rajon alias Rafique before the court seeking a 10-day remand.
Police in a drive arrested Rakib, son of Dr Abdul Malek hailing from Majidpur village in Ishwardi upazila, from Tabunia village in Sadar upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.
The youths, however, fled the scene when Luke screamed for help.
On October 5, three men attempted to kill Luke Sarker, the priest at Ishwardi's Faith Bible Church, by slitting his throat; they fled after the priest shouted for help.
The same day, Luke filed a murder attempt case with the police.
Law enforcers later arrested five Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh members for their alleged involvement with the murder attempt. One of the arrestees have already confessed.
