Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid has urged teachers of public universities to continue with academic activities and assured them that the government will do whatever is possible for their interest.
“University teachers are the most honourable persons of the country. Their role is very important in building skilled manpower,” the minister said while presiding over a ministry meeting on University Grants Commission and education laws yesterday.
According to sources, the status and interest of public university teachers mentioned in the Eighth National Pay Scale was elaborately discussed in the meeting.
Nahid said the education ministry will work together with the Cabinet sub-committee on salary discrimination to protect the interest of public university teachers.
Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) president Prof. Farid Uddin said they are continuing with their academic activities and admission tests have not been hampered, but their demands should be settled at the earliest.
“We've talked to all the ministers of the Cabinet sub-committee and they responded positively to our cause. A section of bureaucrats misguided the ministers about our status and salary. Now we want a quick solution,” he added.
He said that they have called a meeting with the teachers of all the public universities on November 1 for deciding their next course of action.
“The teachers are anxious over the delay in holding the Cabinet sub-committee meeting, as they don’t know what will happen. If teachers don’t get a better status, they would prefer not to join the profession,” he added.
