Hanif on Shamsher resignation

Lack of confidence in party leadership main reason

STAFF REPORTER

Acting General Secretary and Joint General Secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif welcomed the resignation of BNP Vice Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and claimed Shamsher has resigned from BNP because of lack of confidence in its top leadership. “Shamsher has resigned from BNP because of its involvement in violent activities in the name of political programmes and this is a sign of having no confidence in its top leadership of Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman,” Hanif said yesterday. He was addressing a
preparatory meeting with AL-backed Dhaka North and South City Corporation Mayors and Councilors at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.
Hanif said that many mid-ranking BNP leaders dislike Khaleda Zia and  Tarique for their wrong leadership.
They think BNP should be reconstituted, skipping Khaleda Zia and Tarique from it in a bid to drum up public support.
“I hope more conscious BNP leaders will emerge from the rank and file of BNP, aware of the fact that this party will not survive in future for its involvement in terrorist activities,” said the AL leader.  Earlier, Shamsher had announced his retirement from politics, resigning from all BNP posts on health grounds.

Referring to BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan’s statement that their party will not take responsibility if anyone from the party is involved in killing of any foreigner, Hanif stressed that BNP top brass cannot shake off responsibility for murder of two foreigners.
“The murder of two foreigners has not been committed in anyone’s personal interest. It has been a political killing. So, BNP top brass must bear responsibility for it,” he said.
Hanif called upon members of law enforcing agencies to zero in on the culprit who gave direction to former BNP-backed Commissioner Qaiyum to carry out the killings. He alleged that instructions for the killings came from London. “We have been saying from the very beginning that Khaleda Zia went to London with the aim of hatching a conspiracy against the present government and now, it has been proved. Foreigners’ killings have occurred one after another in the country soon after she left,” he claimed.
BNP has appointed lobbyists abroad by spending thousands of US dollars per month with an aim to tarnish the image of the Sheikh Hasina government and halt ongoing trials of war crimes’ convicts, said Hanif.
He called upon party-backed city mayors and councilors to ensure spontaneous participation of party workers as well as masses in the November 2 rally to be organised in the city’s Suhrawardi Udyan to observe Jail Killing Day.
Meanwhile, AL Presidium Member and Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, addressing another programme, said that legal action will be taken against Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) for criticising the 10th parliament.
“TIB should apologise for describing the current parliament as a theatre for muppet shows, otherwise legal action will be taken against it,” Mohammad told reporters after holding a preparatory meeting with alliance partners of AL at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.
The senior AL leader said TIB has dishonored all elected representatives of the 10th parliament.
He said that TIB has made unpardonable and audacious statements against the Jatiya Sangsad and even making such a statement against parliament is not possible for any political party. He said TIB is more despicable than BNP-Jamaat. Mohammad also called upon the Foreign Ministry to find out the root of funding to TIB.
