Bangladesh domestic cricket league got a setback after Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) has decided not to provide both of the grounds (ground 3 and 4) simultaneously that the BCB used for the local league. The Bangladesh cricket has been seeing a lack of ground from the very beginning and BKSP’s decision came up as a blow as the BCB is gearing up for the upcoming local cricket season.
As per the MoU, signed by the BCB and BKSP, the cricket apex body used the ground 3 and 4 for their own purpose. The five-year contract that started from 2013 was expired in December 2018. BCB spent quite a sum of money to renovate the grounds where they ran the domestic leagues from different tiers along with first-class cricket.
BKSP refused to extend the contract citing that the only sports institute of the country had a big Women’s project in hand and as a result they have to dedicate the number four ground for women’s purpose only. The BKSP, however, has no problem to let BCB use the ground 3, said its chief coach Masud Hasan.
“Look, we have already a plan (women’s ground) for this. The BCB will take the final decision whether it will be four or the other ones. But so far what we know is that we will dedicate the fourth ground for Women’s complex.” Masud Hasan told reporters after a meeting with BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury on Thursday.
“We did not talk over (contract) extension. But, because BCB uses the field and the facilities, so if they wants to extend the deal they might come to the terms considering their profit and loss (from the deal),” he said.
“Yes, there are competition factors and some other factors for BCB. So if the deal takes place, BCB can say it properly how it will be done, we can’t say it. And because a women complex is being built under government’s authorisation, which will also be a mega project for BKSP. So, BKSP has decided to dedicate the fourth ground for Women’s complex. So far, BCB has been using the fourth ground for Premier League and National League but now when a big project is under process, they have to show the ground belongs to women. That’s why BKSP has decided that the ground will be under Women’s Complex,” Masud Hasan added.
BCB was offered to renovate the number two ground for cricket purpose but that looks hardly possible due to the drainage system. “It is difficult to renovate number two ground for different reasons. So, in that case we cannot extend our deal further. BKSP needs to help us into acquiring some land so that we can make a new ground,” said a BCB official.
