A huge number of people who are inhabitants of Cox’s Bazar district are suffering due to the influx of Rohingyas in their locality from neighbouring Myanmar. Lands of many local people have squeezed due to establishment of Rohingya camps. Incomes of many local people have come down miserably due to the presence of the Rohingyas. High prices of essential commodities have put additional pressures on the people.
Compassion, generosity, fellow-feeling and sacrifice are some human qualities. But this cannot be one-sided. And there is a limit to human tolerance. The way the people of Cox’s Bazar, particularly those living near Rohingya camps, are facing unwanted problems stemming from staying of Rohingyas for about two years cannot continue for a long time. The people for whom the problems have cropped up should also feel it. By this time many Rohingyas, reportedly, have involved themselves in criminal activities.
It is disturbing to note that the visit of many dignitaries including the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim to Rohingya camps could not help to ensure an early return of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar. The dignitaries saw the extreme hardships Rohingyas are facing and they felt the need of greater support for the largest and most densely populated refugee settlement in the world. Obviously Bangladesh cannot bear the cost of safe living of these oppressed people.
Thousands of Rohingyas have been passing their days and nights as stateless citizens in Bangladesh. They are bearing the brunt of floating existence. Becoming victims of brutal persecution in Myanmar, these hapless Rohingyas came to Bangladesh. They are living in Cox’s Bazar in appalling conditions. It is an obligation for the Myanmar government to accept the Rohingyas as its citizens and ensure their rights in their native soil. But the Myanmar government’s role on this vital issue has surprised the world community.
Being an overpopulated country Bangladesh cannot take the responsibility of the Rohingyas for a long time as it has many more own problems to address. It is the responsibility of the Myanmar government to take back all the Rohingyas immediately.
