Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal yesterday said underground railroads will be constructed in the capital alongside the metro rail ones, reports UNB.
Briefing reporters after the day’s Ecnec meeting at the NEC conference room, Mustafa Kamal said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the Planning Commission to prepare a project on underground railway alongside carrying out the ongoing work on metro rail in Dhaka.
The order comes as the government is gearing up to introduce metro rail in the capital to reduce traffic snarls, he said.
The Planning Minister also said they would suggest the Line Ministry to conduct a feasibility study to prepare the project based on its findings.
He said the proposed underground railway project would be implemented alongside the existing metro rail project while the present mode of communication would also continue in the capital.
“We will conduct a survey soon with the relevant ministry and prepare the project on the basis of the results,” Kamal said after the ECNEC meeting.
Asked about the possible funding of the proposed underground rail project, Kamal said visiting World Bank Senior Vice President Kyle Peters has assured him of necessary funding for the project.
Earlier, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved eight development projects involving Tk. 6,387 crore.
