5 to die, 6 get life term for murder, rape in 2 dists

Five people were sentenced to death while six others got life term imprisonment in Kushtia and Pirojpur districts yesterday and on Wednesday. In Kushtia, a court on Wednesday sentenced five people to death, six others to life imprisonment and six more people to different jail terms in the sensational Nurul Islam murder case. Besides, the court fined all of them Tk 50,000 each. Judge of District and Session’s Judge Court Arup Kumar Goshwami pronounced the verdict.

The condemned convicts are Md Masud, Parvez Hossain, Habibur Rahman Hobi, Fazlur Rahman and Sarwar Afu while the lifers are Billal Hossain, Sohel Rana, Md Monju, Rois Uddin, Matiur Rahman and Md Kabir.

Of the rest, one was awarded seven-year jail while five others were given three-year imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts hacked Nurul Islam to death with sharp weapon on December 19, 2014 while he was on his way to local Poradaha Bazar in Mirpur upazila.

In Pirojpur, a court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his niece after rape in 2010.

The convict, 60-year-old Nur Mohammad, is a resident of Noli Tulatala village in Mathbaria upazila. The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also fined him Tk 1 lakh. According to the prosecution, the convict took his niece Amena, 14, to a bamboo groove on March 21, 2010, where he raped the victim. Nur later clubbed the girl to death when she threatened to inform others about the incident and dumped her body in a nearby canal.

Locals later recovered the body and informed police. Amena’s mother Fatema filed a case over the incident. Police submitted chargesheet against the convict on May 31, 2010.

Nur had also confessed to his crimes before the court.
