Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen yesterday sought support from Thailand to resolve the Rohingya issue mentioning that Bangladesh has a lot of expectations from Thailand as the current chair of Asean. He also highlighted the negative impact of the presence of these large numbers of Rohingyas on the host community and the potential security risk for the entire region; and sought Thai help in early repatriation of Rohingyas in safety and
security.
The issues came up for discussions when Dr Momen met Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai in Bangkok. The Thai Foreign Minister assured that Thailand will continue to work to resolve Rohingya issue.
The meeting held in Bangkok on the sidelines of the 26th Asean Regional Forum in the evening.
During the meeting, Dr Momen mentioned that the government of Bangladesh attaches highest priority to maintaining good relations with the neighbouring countries.
He sought the Thai Foreign Minister's support for his country's investment in Bangladesh, particularly in agro-based industries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both the Foreign Ministers agreed to promote and facilitate more interactions among the businessmen from both sides.
They expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations.
Dr Momen emphasised increasing bilateral trade and investment and collaboration in different areas.
He thanked the Thai government for supporting the initiative of the establishment of Bangabandhu Chair PhD fellowship at Asian Institute of Thailand and stressed making the best use of this mechanism.
Dr Momen reached Bangkok yesterday afternoon to attend the 26th Asean Regional Forum during the 52nd Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (52nd AMM).
The minister will return home on August 3 after attending the Forum, post-ministerial conferences (PMCs) and other related meetings there, an official said.
