DSCC likely to be free from dengue in Sept: Khokon

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Syeed Khokon yesterday said the city is expected to be free from dengue menace in the first week of September. On the other hand, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has said an expert is being brought in from India to help tackle the dengue situation. While briefing reporters after a meeting with Health Minister Zahid Maleque at the secretariat, DSCC Mayor Khokon also acknowledged that the ongoing dengue situation has taken a serious turn. “The dengue situation is getting complicated as the number of infected people is on the rise. Now, there has been a situation to be worried about. Still, there’s a light of hope,” he said.

“The DSCC has managed to free its 11 wards from dengue and we hope it’ll be fully free from dengue within the first week of September,” he added.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul, who was also present at the meeting with the health minister, told reporters that dengue expert Anik Ghosh will come to Bangladesh from Kolkata on Sunday.

The DNCC mayor said new effective drugs would be procured to eliminate mosquitoes as soon as possible. However, there is a lack of experience in this regard, he added.

“It is needed to set up a national research centre on dengue as it is not a seasonal disease and may break out any time of the year,” the mayor said.

Apart from the mmayors and the minister, the meeting was attended, among others, by Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad, Senior Secretary of Education Ministry Md Sohorab Hossain, Secretary of the Health Service Division Md Asadul Islam and Director General of Directorate General of Health Services Prof Abul Kalam Azad.

According to government statistics, the number of dengue patients continued to rise as a total of 1,477 more people infected with the mosquito-borne fever were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till 8am on Wednesday.
