The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday claimed that the pseudo-opposition created in Parliament has become a burden for the government. “There is no real opposition in the 10th Parliament. Given the existence of this fake opposition, we can't really accept the government's sermons on the democratic process in the country,” said BNP spokesperson Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon while addressing a press conference at party headquarters in the city.
It will remain a bad precedent in the country's parliamentary politics, he added. Ripon claimed that the BNP is the real and lawful opposition, and the government would have to talk to the party to keep the democratic process alive in the country.
He supported the view expressed by Transparency International Bangladesh that Parliament has become a “puppet show theatre". He said although both chief whip ASM Feroz and Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif have criticised the TIB report, they could not challenge it. “We believe that the TIB report has only touched the tip of the iceberg. The government should learn to accept the criticism directed at the 10th parliamentary election,” he added.
