Ex-CJ Khairul joins
pvt bank as adviser

Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque has joined First Security Islami Bank Ltd (FSIBL), a private commercial bank of the country, as an adviser. This is the first instance of employing a former chief justice by a commercial bank. When contacted, Justice Haque told The Independent that he joined the bank due to repeated requests from different quarters. “A lot of people requested me to take the job and at one stage I have accepted the offer,” said the former chief justice who is currently serving as the chairman of the Law Commission. Asked whether he would continue with his present engagement as the chairman of Law Commission, he said so far, he did not find anything wrong to continue his service as the Law Commission chairman while serving the bank as an adviser. “My appointment as Law Commission Chairman is contractual. But if I find that it is improper to continue with both the jobs simultaneously, I shall quit one,” he said. Justice Haque was appointed as the 19th chief justice of Bangladesh on 30 September 2010. After retirement, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Law Commission on July 24, 2013. During his tenure, Justice Haque delivered verdicts of a string of high-profile cases but he came to the spotlight after his verdict declaring the caretaker government system unconstitutional and illegal. This verdict prompted the then grand alliance government to scrap the caretaker government system from the constitution. Justice Haque was born in Madaripur district on May 18 in 1944. He obtained his LLB from Dhaka University and Bar-at-Law from Lincolns Inn, London. He was elevated to an additional judge of the High Court Division in April 1998 and confirmed as a judge of the same division in April 2000. He was promoted to a judge of the Appellate Division on July 16, 2009. While a judge of the Appellate Division, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission of Bangladesh, on March 25, 2010.
