Law enforcers are yet to identify the persons who threw a bomb at the Tazia procession from the Hussaini Dalan Imambara premises to mark the day of Ashura on Saturday.
While visiting the crime scene yesterday, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Commanding Officer Jahangir Hossain Matabbor said this.
The three people arrested in connection with the blast have not given any credible information so far. Actually, they were picked up for moving about suspiciously in the area, the RAB-10 chief added.
Quoting the management of the Hussaini Dalan, he said they did not receive any threat before the incident. The RAB officer iterated that the "handmade grenade" was thrown inside the square.
Attacks may be carried out despite security measures, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Additional Commissioner Md Maruf Hasan said yesterday. Such incidents are taking place in other countries also, though high security is in place.
"As there was prior information that attacks may be carried out to destabilise the government, we took adequate measures. In all, 800-900 police personnel were deployed for the Tazia procession. We requested the organisers not to bring out the procession late in the night, but they did not listen," the second-in-command of the DMP said.
To a question, he said: "Considering the 400-year-old tradition, we did not stop them from bringing out the procession."
Meanwhile, an Islami Chhatra Shibir leader from Bogra killed assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ibrahim Hossain Mollah, claimed the chief of a police investigation committee yesterday.
Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Sheikh Maruf Hasan is leading a five-member police body formed to investigate the ASI killing. The four other members of the probe body include the DMP Joint Commissioner (Crime), DC (Mirpur), DC (DB-West) and ADC (Mirpur).
While talking to reporters after visiting the place of occurrence at Gabtali on Tuesday, Maruf claimed that Enamul Haque alias Kamal, president of Adamdighi upazila unit of Chhatra Shibir in Bogra, stabbed the policeman to death in the city on Thursday night. He said they were trying to arrest the Shibir leader.
The DMP DC also claimed that Masudur Rahman alias Sumon who was arrested from the spot is a Shibir activist.
Replying to a question, he said there was similarity between the ASI Ibrahim killing and the bomb blasts at the Shia community’s gathering at Huseni Dalan in the old part of the city. “The handmade bombs recovered from Kamrangirchar after the ASI killing and unexploded bombs as well as elements of exploded bombs recovered from the Huseni Dalan are of the same nature.”
Maruf Hasan also said it would be investigated whether there was any negligence of duty on the part of police during the incident.
ASI Ibrahim of Darus Salam Police Station was stabbed to death by a youth on Thursday night at a checkpoint near Parbata Cinema Hall of Gabtali when a police team was searching his bag.
Police detained one of the attackers - Masudur Rahman alias Sumon— while his accomplice Enamul Haque alias Kamal fled the scene with the motorcycle.
Sub-inspector Habibur Rahman filed a case with the police station on Friday.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Maruf Hasan, who is also the chief of another five-member inquiry committee looking into the Huseni Dalan blasts, visited the headquarters of the Shia community in the afternoon.
Talking to reporters after the visit, he said a group of 2-5 miscreants might have been involved in the bomb attack on the Shia community gathering. He said the main aim of the bomb blasts was to destabilise the country pushing the government to an awkward position.
