Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said that there are more than one “boro bhai” (big brother) behind the recent killings of Italian aid worker Cesare Tavella and Japanese citizen Konio Hoshi. “All of them are politicians, who tried to tarnish the image of the country by murdering the two foreigners,” he told reporters at his Secretariat office. The minister also claimed that there are national and international conspiracies behind these killings. “Based on the information revealed by the arrestees, our law enforcement and intelligence agencies have been able to detect the masterminds behind these killings. All the details will be disclosed within a day or two. We don’t want to stage any drama in the name of revealing information,” he added.
“Some of the masterminds are still in the country, while others have gone abroad. Those who are still here have been put under the scanner of the intelligence agencies and those staying abroad will be brought back with the help of the Interpol,” Kamal said. He also said the masterminds are trying to cover up the murders by using hired assassins. “We’ll catch everyone involved in the killings.” The minister said that another detective team working on the murder of Konio Hoshi is very close to nabbing the main culprits. Regarding the bomb blasts at Huseni Dalan in Old Dhaka, Kamal claimed that the law enforcement agencies have already collected video footage from the area and those responsible for the explosions would be identified soon.
Asked about strengthened security at three international airports, the minister said that they have not issued any red or yellow alert. “We’ve only beefed up security at those airports to avert any subversive act,” he added. Meanwhile, European Ambassador in Dhaka Pierre Mayaudon yesterday said that he and ‘his colleagues’ were happy over the measures taken by the government to ensure the security of foreigners. Talking to reporters after a discussion on ‘climate change’ in the capital, the EU envoy hoped fair and impartial probe into the murders of two foreigners.
French Ambassador in Dhaka Sophie Aubert, who was also present in the programme, stressed the need for fair investigation into the killings of two foreigners. She also expressed her
satisfaction over the government steps for the security of foreigners.
In another development, the United States has noted with concern the claims of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), also known as ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) that it carried out the recent attacks in Bangladesh, including the murder of Italian aid worker Cesare Tavella.
Washington also said that it takes these claims seriously and is working closely with Bangladesh and other key partners to identify the perpetrators to bring them to justice.
“Well, we certainly note with concern ISIL’s
claim of responsibility for the attack. And, as we have elsewhere, we take those claims seriously,” John Kirby, Spokesperson of the US State Department, said on Monday while replying to questions regarding the recent attacks and ISIS’s claim for these attacks.
“We’re working closely with the Government of Bangladesh and key partners to assess who is responsible for these attacks and to help bring them to justice,” he said.
When asked if the presence of ISIS in Bangladesh is real one, the Spokesperson said, “It’s difficult to say the degree to which ISIL is or is not operating in Bangladesh.”
“I’m not at a position where I can make that determination. But there’s an investigation going on right now that we want to – if there’s a need to be helpful, we want to be helpful,” he said.
Kirby also said, “It’s by law enforcement authorities there in Bangladesh to confirm responsibility. It’s up to them to do this. But I think it’s prudent for us to take ISIL claims seriously, and we do.”
“But I just don’t have anything specific to give you in terms of actual responsibility for it. We just let – we need to let the law enforcement agencies there in Bangladesh investigate this and come to their own conclusions.”
