Farmers in Bogra region are expecting a bumper bean production during the current season, thanks to favourable weather.
Some 5,000 hectares of land were brought under bean cultivation in Bogra, Sirajganj, Pabna, and Natore districts this season, according a source at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Of the total area, about 1,000 hectares were cultivated in 12 upazilas of Bogra using intensive cultivation method, the DAE source said.
Nearly 5,000 farmers of 250 villages of the four districts have changed their lot by cultivating beans.
Abul Kashem, a farmer of Sajahanpur Upazila in Bogra district brought ‘Ipsha’ and local variety of bean seeds from Jessore a few years back and cultivated it on one bigha of land. He made a profit of Tk 15,000 in one year. Encouraged by the success of Abul Kashem many other farmers have taken up bean cultivation.
DAE sources said on an average 60 to 65 maunds (one mound equal 37.3242 kg) of beans are produced on a bigha each season.
Abdus Sattar, a bean cultivator of Sajahanpur upazila said he had cultivated bean on 10 bighas of land this season at a cost of Tk 120,000.
He is now selling around 5 maunds of bean daily and expects to earn a net profit of Tk 400,000 at the end of the season.
A big wholesale market of bean has been set up at Mahasthan Garh and Raza Bazaar in Bogra town on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway creating employment for many local people.
Local traders said around 100 tonnes of beans are supplied daily to various parts of the country, including the capital. The supply is expected to double in a few days.
Md Faridul Alam, a field officer of DAE, said bean cultivators were given training on how to control pest without using insecticides. DAE Deputy Director Mr. Chondi Dash Kundu said bean cultivation has marked a sharp rise over last five years as farmers have found it profitable.
