�Forest robber� held with 23 firearms

Khulna: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) held a member of a forest robber gang in possession of 23 firearms and 1,531 rounds of bullet from Badurjhola Khal of the Sundarbans West Zone in Koyra upazila on Monday night, reports UNB. The arrestee was identified as M Shahinur Sardar alias Shahin, 34, member of forest robber gang ‘Elias Bahini’ and an inhabitant of Murugachha village in Tala upazila of Satkhira district. Tipped off that members of ‘Elias Bahini’ were staying in the area, a team of RAB-6 battalion carried out a drive there, said Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, commanding officer of the battalion, at a press conference held at its Labanchar headquarters yesterday. Sensing the presence of the RAB personnel, members of the gang opened fire on them, forcing the elite force to retaliate that triggered a gunfight at about 7:00pm, he said. Several gunshots were traded between the gang members and the RAB members during the 10 minutes gun battle, he said. Later, RAB members held Shahin while his other associates managed to flee the scene. The elite force also recovered 23 firearms and 1,531 rounds of bullet from the spot.
