�Reduce carbon emission to cut disaster risk�

Experts at a workshop on Monday stressed the need for launching a campaign to reduce carbon emission and stop harmful practices on environment to cut disaster risk, reports BSS. As earth atmosphere is warming at an alarming rate, industrialised nations must set a target to reduce carbon emission for protecting the planet from its harmful impact, they told a two-day workshop “Disaster Risk Reduction” here. The workshop was held in the auditorium of the Centre for Advanced Research in Science (CARS) of Dhaka University (DU), a press release said. DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Pro-VC of Bangladesh Open University Prof. Dr Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain, Director General of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan and Director of BUET-Japan Institute of Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety Prof. Dr. Tahmeed M. Al-Hussaini, among others, addressed the workshop with former MP Dr. Akram H. Chowdhury in the chair. Prof. AAMS Arefin said, “Our global environment is rapidly becoming more erratic due to various harmful practices including deforestation, carbon emission, burning of fossil fuels.” He described Bangladesh as a disaster prone country as it faces various natural disasters including flood and cyclone almost every year.  “So, we must take adequate preparedness developing coping capacity and acquiring knowledge to make Bangladesh a disaster resilient country,” he added.
