RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a post-rally discussion have mentioned that vitamin A supplement is essential for the normal functioning of the visual system alongside freeing the society from various problems including eyesight and night blindness, reports BSS.
They also stressed the need for vitamin enriched foods including green vegetables for eyesight as it is very valuable for human lives. Civil Surgeon Office and Brac jointly organised the programme in its seminar-hall in observance of the World Sight Day-2015 on Monday. ''Eye service for all'' was the main theme of the day. Vision Bangladesh District Eye Care Project supported the event. Civil Surgeon Dr Abdus Sobhan addressed the discussion as chief guest with Senior Health Education Officer Sazzad Hossain in the chair. Brac Regional Manager Fahmida Khatun, Deputy Manager of Mecca Eye Hospital Akhtaruzzaman, Health Inspector of Rajshahi City Corporation Ariful Islam and Brac Senior Medical Officer Dr Afsana Kabir Khan also spoke.
During his welcome speech, Brac District Representative AKM Jahedul Islam highlighted the significance of the day.
Under the project, Brac provided cataract operation support to 3854 patients besides free eye check-up to many others. Civil Surgeon Dr Abdus Sobhan said that one child and one person lose their eyesight every minute. The present government is working relentlessly to reach healthcare facilities including eye service at the door steps of every citizen by 2020, he added. The initiative eyes eliminating avoidable blindness by 2020. The National Eye Policy was launched to make it a success.
Dr Sobhan said Bangladesh signed the 'Vision 2020', a joint initiative of the WHO and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), in the year 2000. The purposes of the policy are to build health service infrastructure in primary and secondary level, improve coordination between international- and national levels, skill development of eye-specialists and increasing the rate of cataract surgery, kids' blindness prevention and bring the eye-care services available to the aged, middle-age and children.
