3 hurt in Juba League infighting
Three people were injured in a clash between two factions of Juba League over establishing supremacy in Subidbazar area of Sylhet on Monday. Witnesses said two groups -- one led by Ashraf Siddique and the other led by Collins Singh -- locked in an altercation over establishing supremacy in the area around 9:30 pm. At one stage, supporters of Ashraf stabbed rival group supporters Khorshed Alam, Jillu Miah and Juned, leaving the trio seriously injured. The injured were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. Gousul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station, confirmed the incident.

Youth held with arm, ammo

Police in a drive arrested a youth along with a pistol and five rounds of bullets from Fazilpur area of Narayanganj on Monday night.The arrestee was Shwpan, 28, a resident of Fazilpur village of Fatulla police station. Md Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Fatulla model police station, said the arrestee is a listed criminal. He said Shwpan is wanted in several criminal cases and also involved with oil pilfering from state-run oil depot in Fatulla area.
In another drive in same area, police on Monday night arrested a notorious drug peddler whose elder brother Parvez was stabbed to death two years ago by rivals. The arrested was Mehedi, 30, a resident of Tantipara under Fatulla police station.

Bridge construction work begins

The construction works of the long-awaited Khoksha Ghaghot Bridge at Tk 1.42 crore has begun on the Mirganj Road under Ward No-32 in Rangpur city. Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu inaugurated the construction work by unveiling plaque of foundation stone of the bridge at a ceremony on the site on Monday afternoon as the chief guest. RCC has been implementing construction works of the bridge under the City Governance Project (CGP) with funding of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Jharna Das Purkayastha awarded

Noted litterateur Jharna Das Purkayastha has won the Bangladesh Shishu Academy Literary Award of 1421. Bangladesh Shishu Academy announced the name of the winner of Bangladesh Shishu Academy Literary Award 1421, said a press release here on Monday. The award is worth Tk 50,000. Bangladesh Shishu Academy formally launched the award in 1989. So far a total number of 25 litterateurs had own this award. Jharna Das made immense contributions to children and juvenile literature for the last five decades. Her writings include 'Bhutu o Tuntuner Shawpna, Dalir Mam Putul, Evaner Kazla Didi, Rong Makha Shirt, Muskil Asan Mama, Tusi Amar Tusi, Lalur Muktijuddo, Megh Josnar Tupur and Tak Jal Misti Galpo.

Training course ends

The concluding ceremony of a 24-day training course on 'Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for ICT, Bangladesh & Global Studies, Accounting and English' at Government Teachers' Training College (GTTC) was held here on Monday afternoon. A total of 110 teachers with one each from 110 secondary level schools, colleges, Dakhil and Alim madrasas of all eight districts under Rangpur division participated in the course that began on October 3. The training course was arranged under the Teaching Quality Improvement-II (TQI-II) in Secondary Education Project of Directorate of Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education for enhancing ICT and teaching skills of the teachers.
