According to a report published in this newspaper highly placed sources in police said that the mastermind of the murder of Italian aid worker Caeser Tavella, killed in the city’s diplomatic zone, Gulshan, on September 28, has been traced. The police has so far arrested four suspected killers of the Italian aid worker and also found the motorbike used in the murder. This indeed is a breakthrough in the case that the people were waiting for.
We believe that there must be absolute transparency regarding the investigation of the case. No consideration of political accommodation for political gain should divert or slowdown the investigations. Even if big names or figures of some political parties are unquestionably seen linked to these sheer appalling crimes, the same must be unveiled in the public view. There should be no fear or favour shown to anyone and justice should be allowed to run its own course.
The people in a democracy have the right to know who are responsible for the heinous crime which besmirched the much-deserved reputation of Bangladesh as a safe abode for foreigners. Bangladesh’s highest interests and security needs are linked to this. Before this particular gruesome murder (followed soon by the killing of a Japanese national) Bangladesh was considered as perhaps the safest country for foreigners in the region.
It is most important to identity of the ‘big brothers’ whom the police mentioned while nabbing the four killers. The authorities must find out whether there is anyone or several persons even bigger than the ‘big brother’ suspected to be involved in the murder of foreign nationals.
There are certain quarters who are claiming that on the whole the arrests have been stage managed by the police. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of the concerned departments of the government to assuage any doubts from the standpoint of transparency in the public conception.
Certain important government functionaries and senior police officers have gone on record saying that there are involvements of certain political parties in this murder. The motive cited was to destabilise the country and create anarchy. If this is indeed true these elements must be dealt with severely. If the allegations are true then these political organisations are party to treason and in no circumstances can treason be tolerated. There can be no political space for elements that are conspiring against their own country and carrying out such vicious acts.
The unfortunate fact is perpetrators of crimes of similar nature in the past have gotten away scot-free or with very light punishment . If stern actions were taken against these elements previously it could have a deterrent effect on potential criminals and things would not have come to such an unfortunate pass.
