Tremor in Hindukush a warning for Bangladesh, says expert

Shehab Ahmed

After Nepal, the next major earthquake could occur in and around Bangladesh. "The tremor in Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India, with its epicentre in the Hindukush region, has sounded the alarm bell for us to get ready," Moqsud Kamal, a disaster management expert and professor of geology at Dhaka University, said yesterday (Monday). Commenting on the massive earthquake that took place just 250km north-east of the Afghan capital, Kabul, rattling northern Pakistan and the Indian capital, New Delhi, yesterday afternoon, Professor Kamal said the energy released by the recent Nepal earthquake and the latest tremor in the Hindukush may find its way to the Himalayan tectonic plate on which stand countries like Bhutan striding the Himalayas, only 60km from Rangpur in Bangladesh.
The last time such a quake took place in Bangladesh was in 1918, jolting Srimangal, north-east of Dhaka. A quake may occur a century later, and the soft sediment down below the plains of Bangladesh may be affected, the quake watcher noted.
The fault lines there may generate quakes up to 6 to 7 on the Richter Scale, professor Kamal, also an expert of the comprehensive disaster management project, warned. It  could be disastrous in densely populated plains and cities like Rangpur and Dhaka.
He also noted that the pent-up energy that was expected to be released from the Nepal quake killing thousands and flattening homes was yet to be released fully. It could be reinforced by little tremors around and yesterday's tremor in the Hindukush, ready to rock the earth’s crust, troubling countries like Bhutan and Bangladesh.
