American Center to screen ‘Norma Rae’ Oct 29

American Center will screen an American drama film titled ‘Norma Rae’, written by Harriet Frank, Jr. and Irving Ravetch, and directed by Martin Ritt, at its auditorium at 3pm on October 29. The film is about a factory worker from a small town in North Carolina, who becomes involved in the labour union activities at the textile factory where she works after the health of her and her co-workers is compromised. Norma Rae is a lively, but dependable, wife and mother in an Alabama mill town. Like her father, her mother and most of her friends, she works at the Henley mill, spinning and weaving cloth as the days go by without much apparent purpose. Her ‘nothing special’ life changes when she heard a speech by a New York union organizer, Reuben Warshowsky. Norma Rae decides to join the effort to unionize her shop, and then one by one, the other workers stop their mill machines, and eventually, the entire room becomes silent. After all the machines have been switched off, Norma Rae is taken to jail but is freed by Reuben. Norma Rae then successfully orchestrates an election to unionize the factory, resulting in a victory for the union. Finally, Reuben says goodbye to Norma; despite his being smitten with her throughout the movie, they only shake hands because he knows she is married and loves her husband, and Reuben heads back to New York.
The film stars Sally Field in the title role, Beau Bridges as Norma Rae’s husband, Sonny, and Ron Leibman as a union organizer Reuben Warshowsky. The film Norma Rae won Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Original Song (‘It Goes Like It Goes’). Actress Sally Field received best actress awards in the 1979 Cannes Film Festival.
