At least 30 cattle died from foot and mouth disease, locally called as ‘khura rog’, at villages in Pirganj upazila in a period of one month.
Sources said hundreds of cattle have been affected by the highly contagious viral disease in the area. It has spread to at least 15 to 16 villages in the district.
Nalini Mohonta, a farmer of Tajpur village, said: “Suddenly, blisters appeared on the mouth of three of my cows. Of them, one died within a few days.”
Rafiqul Islam of Satia village said his three cows cannot swallow any food, and have been suffering from fever for the last 8 to 10 days.
Jainanda Roy of Mallikpur village alleged that upazila veterinary office had no supply of vaccine for the disease, which has resulted in the deaths of the cattle.
Pirganj Upazila Animal Husbandry Officer Abul Kalam Azad admitting the death of 30 cattle by khura disease within a month said there are one lakh cows, 3,000 buffaloes and 116,000 16 thousand goats in Pirganj upazila.
