KHULNA: Farmers and officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are expecting a bumper production of winter vegetables in all the nine upazilas of Khulna district and two Metro thana in the city during the current season, reports BSS. Department of Agriculture and Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers cultivated winter vegetables on 5,855 hectares of land this year which was the same the previous year.
Deputy Director of DAE Md. Abdul Latif said a total of 1,11, 245 tonnes of winter vegetables were produced last year from 5,855 hectares of land. The DAE also set a same production target this year from the same hectares of land. The production of vegetables in the current season will continue till first week of January, he said.
Various winter vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, bean, radish, carrot, tomatoes, sweet potato, beat and other vegetables have been cultivated in the fields.
Meanwhile, the early harvests of the winter vegetables have brought smiles to the farmers as they are getting better prices at the beginning of the season, farmers and market sources said. Deputy Director of DAE Abdul Latif told BSS that the production target may exceed if favourable weather condition continues during the season.
While visiting Dakop upazila on Sunday, Paran Mondol of Kamarkhali village said he has cultivated cauliflower, cabbage and tomatoes on 60 acres of land and is expecting to get 250 maunds of cauliflower and 275 maunds of cabbage from the land.
Meanwhile, following large-scale early farming of the vegetables under the changed climate conditions, all varieties of winter vegetables have now flooded the city's kitchen markets.
Visiting the City's Shandha Bazar (Evening) Kitchen Market Sunday night, this correspondent found that early winter vegetable like cauliflower and radish have flooded the market.
A few customers were seen buying the winter vegetables while most of the commoners did not purchase due to price hike. Ibrahim Howlader, an employee of a private farm in the city told BSS that he bought the cauliflower at Taka 70 per kg and radish Taka 50 per kg. "Though the prices are high, I bought the winter vegetables as they have just arrived in the kitchen markets before the upcoming winter season," he said.
