The High Court (HC) yesterday directed two city corporations to take effective steps within 24 hours to eradicate and destroy Aedes mosquitoes as well as to take other preventive measures to stop the spread of dengu, chikungunya and other similar diseases in the city.

In a suo motu move, the HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their inaction to eradicate Aedes mosquitoes and stop the spread of dengu, chikungunya and similar diseases in Dhaka city should not be declared illegal. It also asked the authorities concerned to explain why action should not be taken against those responsible for failing to take effective steps for the prevention of those diseases.

The HC bench asked the mayors and chief executive officers of the two city corporations; secretaries of health, local government and rural development; and director general of the health department to implement its order and reply to the rule within four weeks.

In its order, the HC bench said: “Our attention has been drawn to a number of reports in the newspapers, including today’s edition of ‘Prothom Alo’, ‘Jano Kontho’ and ‘Bhorer Pata’, as well as yesterday’s edition of ‘Prothom Alo’, where it was reported that hundreds of people in the capital are suffering from dengu, chikungunya and similar other diseases due to the inaction of the authorities—especially the two city corporations of Dhaka. It was also reported that more than 11 people died recently due to dengu.”

“Dhaka Medical College sources and other official sources have reportedly said more than 100 people are daily being admitted to various hospitals of the city due to dengu and chikungunya. Unofficial sources report an even higher number. Unless something is done to stop these diseases, it will become an epidemic, we are therefore, inclined to issue the following suo motu order,” it added.

Assistant attorney generals Zaidy Hasan Khan and Saira Fairoz represented the state during the court proceedings.
