Women empowerment must for overall development: Speaker

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday said gender equity and empowerment of women is a must to ensure the country’s overall and sustainable development, reports UNB.  “The country’s half of the population are women. It’s quite impossible to achieve sustainable development without ensuring women’s empowerment,” she told the inaugural session of the Gender Network Meeting orgainsed by Unicef Bangladesh at a city hotel.
Mentioning that Bangladesh is a role model in women empowerment, the Speaker said women must be included more in economic, social and political activities to empower them.
She said Bangladesh has achieved a marked progress in reducing child and maternal mortality and poverty level through ensuring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). “We must work for the development of women to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Dr Sharmin stressed the need for ensuring accommodation and establishing daycare centres for the working women, including the workers of RMG factories.
She also urged all to work together to cope with the adverse impacts of global climate change.
Unicef Bangladesh reprehensive Edouard Beigbeder also spoke on the occasion while its deputy executive director Gita Rao Gupta presented the keynote paper titled ‘The Gender Action and the SDGs: What are the States for Unicef’.
