Captive power plants get 6 months to improve efficiency

Immediate steps will be taken to provide gas connections to industries which have received demand notes
STAFF REPORTER

Dr Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury, Prime Minister’s adviser on power, energy and mineral resources, has given the captive power plants six months to improve their efficiency to 60%.
Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar—"Energy efficiency improvement in industries”—organised by the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) at a city hotel, Chowdhury urged industrialists to ensure the highest level efficiency in using energy.
Although businessmen and leaders of different trade bodies present at the event had asked for one more year to reach 60% energy efficiency, the energy adviser told them, “You've proven yourselves in trying times and I've full confidence that you can achieve that level in six months”.
He also said that immediate steps will be taken to provide gas connections to those industries which have already received their demand notes.
Chowdhury said the country's gas reserves will start to deplete within the next two or three years. “Tough times are ahead. We must become cautious now. Otherwise, we'll face a harsh situation in the energy sector," he warned.
He also gave his verbal consent during the seminar to industries to sell their waste heat in any form to neighbouring industries. “I've long been saying that waste heat could be re-used in other industries," he said.
Earlier, presenting the keynote paper, Dr Ijaz Hossain, professor of the chemical engineering department of BUET, said that many industries are generating their own electricity using gas, but they are not utilising the waste heat properly. “The problem is that they are using electricity at the same time to run their chillers. Absorption refrigeration can utilise waste heat to satisfy the cooling demand, thereby saving the electricity used by the chillers," he explained.
Hossain said that up to 20 per cent of additional electricity can be generated through efficient use of technology in power production, transmission, distribution and consumption. He recommended giving gas connections to captive generators as they are more efficient than grid power. He also recommended setting up industrial zones next to large power plants and selling of waste heat or steam to other industries.
Speaking on the occasion, AR Khan, chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), said that Bangladesh must focus on energy efficiency and its conservation to ensure environmentally sustainable economic growth. He also said the country can increase its power production by 1,000MW with the help of modern technology.

BCI president AK Azad presided over the seminar.
