Security has been beefed up at all international airports—Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Shah Amanat International Airport and Osmani International Airport—following apprehensions that “subversive activities” could be carried out there, sources in the civil aviation authority disclosed.
To ensure fool-proof security measures in the airports, the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) has deployed crisis response teams (CRTs) in and around the international airports, the sources added. Talking to this correspondent, assistant superintendent of police of the APBN of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Noor Alam Siddiqui, said they have deployed the necessary members of the battalion and a CRT with arms at the airport in order to ensure security for the airfield, considering the overall situation in the country.
“We have deployed the necessary forces after getting directions from the Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB). This will continue till further orders in this connection,” he said. He disclosed that they are not allowing visitors inside the airport.
Security has also been beefed up at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on receiving information on subversive activities. As part of the measures, a check-post was set up at the entrance to stop visitors. Security has been enhanced at each gate of the airport, disclosed director of Osmani International Airport in Sylhet, Hafiz Ahmed. The airport will be under closer supervision following the orders of the higher authority, he said. A meeting was held last night in this connection, he added. “From Monday morning onwards, we have frisked all people entering the airport,” said Bimol, the head of a security section at Osmani Airport.
Law enforcement agencies have beefed up security in key government, private establishments and key point installations (KPIs) in Chittagong over fears of a possible attack. The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has directed all police stations to remain alert. Additional police have been deployed in the entire city.
The police have also set up additional check-posts in the city.
Sources in the CMP said security forces had received information that Biman passengers could be snatched, and the Jamaat-e-Islami and its students’ wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, have chalked out sabotage plans at different important institutions in the port city. Security measures have been beefed up at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport. The authorities have temporarily stopped the entry of all visitors to the airport area, announced the Civil Aviation Authority.
Security has also been beefed up at the railway station, bus terminals, port, court and important oil establishments.
In the meantime, the CMP has started a crackdown to nab saboteurs and their planners under the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
“We have beefed up security measures in important government, private establishments and KPIs to combat any kind of sabotage, and we are continuing our drive to nab suspected saboteurs. Additional police have been deployed and check-posts set up at important points of the city,” said additional police commissioner (administration, finance and traffic), AKM Shahidur Rahman.
Bakalia police nabbed two leaders—Shahadur Rashid Chowdhury, student welfare secretary, and Mohammad Ismail, former president of the Chittagong North unit of Shibir—over sabotage plans in Chittagong. Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakalia police station, told The Independent, “The duo are involved in carrying
out sabotage activities in the city during the countrywide blockade programme enforced by the BNP-led alliance. Currently, they have designed a blueprint to carry out sabotage in the Bakalia area. On receiving information, we have nabbed them.”
The district police yesterday arrested 237 people, including 16 Jamaat-Shibir activists.
Meanwhile, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said they have beefed up security at the international airports to ensure security for passengers.
However, the civil aviation ministry, in a press release, said no red alert had been issued at the international airports yesterday.
‘The airport authority restricted entry of spectators to the airport for rearranging the security system and carrying out renovation at HISA,” the release stated.
The release said some television channels and online newspapers have published news that a red alert has been issued at HISA. “It is not true. And this kind of news can create confusion among people,” the communiqué added.
