Submerged gangway hampers ferry transportation in Bhola
Our Correspondent, Bhola
Transportation through ferries on the Bhola–Laxmipur route in the Meghna river is being serously hampered as the gangway of the Ilisha ferry ghat has gone under water following a rise in the water level from the upper stream of the river due to torrential rain.
Hundreds of vehicles, including loaded trucks, passenger buses, microbuses and lorries, could be seen stranded on the road for last four days as the ferries fail to continue their regular trips. Kaisur Ahamed, executive engineer of the Chafassion Water Development Board office, told The Independent that the Meghna is now flowing 50 cm above the danger level.
BIWTA ghat manager (Bhola) Kamaruzzaman said that since the gangway was constructed lower than the main road, it has gone under water and so transport could not be moved from the road to the ferry. As a result, hundreds of goods-laden trucks, passenger buses and other vehicles are now stranded on both sides of the ferry ghats of Ilisha and Mojhu Chowdhury for days.
The matter has been informed to the ministry concerned, he added.
The authorities have been urged to construct a gangway that could deal with high levels of water, but they are yet to take any initiative in this respect.
