A court in Mymensingh yesterday sentenced five people to life term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh in 2002.
The convicts were identified as Ruhul Amin, 57, Nurul Hoque, 55, Munjurul Hoque, 52, Kala Chand, 55, and Nabi Hossain, 55, of village Tenguripara in Gouripur. They all are farmers as well.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default to suffer one month more in jail.
Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nurul Amin Biplob handed down the verdict yesterday noon, said Sheikh Kabirul Islam, court inspector of Mymensingh.
According to the case statement, there was a feud over a piece of land among the convicts and their neighbour Alauddin at village Tenguripara in Gouripur. Over the dispute, they locked in an altercation over cutting paddy on November 17 in 2002. At one stage, the convicts attacked Alauddin with sticks, leaving him injured critically.
He was immediately rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Alauddin’s elder brother Nurul Amin lodged a case accusing 11 people with Gouripur Police Station and police pressed a charge-sheet accusing nine persons on July 23 in 2007.
Four other accused of the case were acquitted as the charges brought against them were not proved, added the court inspector.
