Man gets life term for murder

A court in Mymensingh yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his neighbour in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh in 1999.
The convict was identified as Tabarok Hossain Akanda, son of Abdur Rashid Akanda of Amirabari in Trishal.
The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000, in default to suffer three months more in jail.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Iqbal Hossain handed down the verdict yesterday noon, said Sheikh Kabirul Islam, court inspector of Mymensingh.
According to the case statement, there was a feud over a piece of land between Tabarok Hossain and his neighbour Farhad Hossain Akanda, son of Tofazzol Hossain Akanda.
Over the dispute, there had been an altercation between Tabarok and Farhad in the morning on December 20 in 1999. At one stage of altercation, Tabarok attacked Farhad with sharp weapons, leaving him injured critically.
Hearing his screams, locals and family members rushed to the spot and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Farhad’s elder brother Sarwar Hossain Akanda lodged a case accusing nine people with Trishal Police Station next day. Later, police pressed a charge-sheet accusing the nine people. Eight other accused of the case were acquitted as the charges brought against them were not proved, said the court inspector.
‘Govt working to improve living standard of rural people’

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam yesterday said the government is working for improving living standard of rural people through implementing different programmes across the country.
“We are implementing ICT-based public services to reach all civic services to the doorsteps of rural people,” he told a seminar titled “Research for development of our villages, our cities” at Rural Development Academy(RDA), Bogura.

Girl held for ‘sharing’ friend’s indecent photos on Facebook

Police arrested a girl from Ramerdanga village in Sadar upazila on Saturday morning reportedly for sharing indecent photos of her friend on Facebook which forced the victim to make a suicide attempt.
The arrestee is Rini Khatun, 18, daughter of Abdur Rakib of the village.
Mustafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said Rini took nude photos of the victim, a first year student of Jhaudanga College, while helping her take a bath recently when a bridegroom party came to see her.
Later, she extorted money from the college girl for several times threating to upload the photos on Facebook.
However, Rini shared the photos on Facebook recently as her latest demand for money went unheeded. Upset at the circulation of photos on the social networking site, the college girl tried to commit suicide by hanging herself on Friday night. The victim, who was undergoing treatment at Satkhira Sadar Hospital, is now out of danger, said doctors.
The victim’s father filed a complaint with the police station on Friday night, the OC said, adding that they later arrested the girl.
3 held in schoolgirl murder case

Three people were arrested on Saturday night in a case filed over the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl in the district town.
Anushka Ayat Bondhon, a ninth grader, was found dead at the dormitory of Fowzia Motin Public School yesterday. Her father Anwar Jahid Babul Mridha filed a case that night at the Sadar Police Station.
Police promptly arrested main accused Abu Taha Sadi, the school’s director, his wife Najnin Mustary Nupur and her elder brother Shibli.
Md Abdullah, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, declined to divulge details, saying that the cause of death would be clear after the post-mortem examination.
New school bldg inaugurated

Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan yesterday inaugurated a newly constructed two-storey building of Kalur Hat KC High School in Debiganj upazila of the district.
The inaugural function was held at Kalur Hat KC High School in Debiganj upazila. Upazila Chairman Abdul Maleq and officials of local administration, among others, were present at the occasion. Education Engineering Department constructed the two-storey building at a cost of Taka 73 lakh.Speaking on the occasion, Sujan said despite a number of challenges, Bangladesh has some remarkable and praiseworthy achievements in the education sector.
“Distribution of free textbooks among the students of primary and secondary levels, increased enrolment rate and eradicating gender inequality in primary and secondary education have already been acknowledged in different international forums,” he added.
