BNP sees govt plot in leaders� arrest
The arrest of two BNP leaders in the city yesterday drew a sharp criticism from the opposition party. The government has been filing fabricated cases against BNP leaders and activists, and arresting them as part of its propaganda to cover up its failure to maintain law and order in the country, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement. The statement was sent to media houses shortly after the arrest of former BNP lawmaker of Dhaka-13 constituency Dewan Mohammad Salauddin from Paribagh in Dhaka and Savar municipality mayor Mohammad Refat Ullah from his residence at Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
Demanding the unconditional release of the two BNP leaders, the partys acting secretary general alleged that the government has also stripped the leaders and workers of their right to legal relief.
The BNP leader accused the government of resorting to terror tactics against opposition politicians.
The former BNP lawmaker and the Savar municipality mayor were arrested as part of a conspiracy to interrupt our partys reorganisation activities across the country. The government was plotting to establish one-party rule in the country, he added.
The BNP leader alleged that law and order has deteriorated under the Awami League government. But instead of maintaining law and order, the law enforcers are let loose against BNP men, he said, calling upon the government to return to healthy politics.
On Saturday, Fakhrul had condemned the bomb attacks at Hosni Dalan and demanded a neutral investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice.
