Youth beaten to death in Kushtia
A young man with physical disabilities was beaten to death allegedly by some local people at Nishchintapur village in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia yesterday morning, reports UNB. The deceased was Mir Shahin, 30, a resident of Khayerchara village in the upazila. Locals alleged some local people, including Anis, used to tease Shahin out of fun. Yesterday morning, Shahin locked into an altercation with some local people as they teased him as usual. At one stage, they beat up him mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. Later, Shahin was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead. Officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station Kazi Jalal Uddin confirmed the incident.
70,000 yaba tablets seized
Cox’s Bazar: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 70,000 pieces of yaba tablets worth Tk 2.10 crore from near the Naf River at Baraitali in Teknaf upazila early yesterday, reports UNB. Tipped off, a BGB team, led by its company commander Subedar M Zakaria, conducted a drive in the area around 4:30am and recovered the yaba tablets in an abandoned condition, commanding officer of the BGB-42 battalion Lt. Col Abu Jar Al Zahid said. However, there was no arrest as the drug smugglers managed to flee the scene, he said.
Dhanbari hospital inaugurated
OUR CORRESPONDENT, Tangail A 50-bed Dhanabri upazila hospital in Tangail district was inaugurated yesterday afternoon. Former food minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, MP, formally opened the hospital as chief guest. Dr Shahjahan Kabir, upazila health and family planning officer, said the hospital had been operating in a rented house for about nine years. People of the area were deprived of services for want of beds. Four specialised doctors, two medical officers, one RMO could not render proper services to the people for want of own premises. The hospital will start operating at its own building from today, he added. On the occasion, a discussion was held with Civil Surgeon of Tangail Dr Sayed Ibne Sayeed in the chair. Among others, Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan addressed the meeting as chief speaker.
Health Engineering Department has constructed the hospital at a cost of Tk17 crores.
