Team leaves tomorrow for Nepal expeditions

A flag-off ceremony and press conference was held on Friday for the first Bangladeshi expedition to Mt Ama Dablam and the second attempt to climb Mt Kyazo Ri in Nepal.  The leader of the expedition, M A Mohit, and six other members, Nur Mohammad, Kazi Bahlul Maznu, Shamim Talukder, Ikramul Hasan Shakil, Shayla Parvin and Fowzia Ahmed, receive the national flag from special guests at the ceremony, held at the National Press Club in the capital, says a press release. The seven-member team will leave Dhaka for Nepal tomorrow (October 27), and attempt to climb Mt Kyazo Ri (20,295 ft) in 20 days. The first Bangladeshi expedition to Kyazo Ri failed in 2014 due to an unprecedented snowfall in the Himalayas. Expedition leader Mohit is the only Bangladeshi to have climbed Mt Everest twice, both from the north and south sides. Two other members, Nur Mohammad and Bahlul Maznu, have respectively conquered five and three 6,000m mountains; Shamim Talukder has participated in one 6,000m expedition, while  Hasan Shakil is joining an expedition for the first time after undergoing formal mountaineering training in India. It will also be the first climbing experience for Shayla Parvin and Fowzia Ahmed.  At the end of Mt Kyazo Ri expedition, six members will return home, while Mohit will start a 15-day  expedition to Mt Ama Dablam (22,350 ft). Due to the technically difficult climbing on rock, snow and ice, Ama Dablam is considered one of the world’s most formidable mountaineering challenges.  Aspiring to conquer two tough Himalayan mountains in two expeditions is a first for Bangladesh. This unique expedition has been planned by Bangla Mountaineering & Trekking Club, and sponsored jointly by Apex Group; Shah Cement; BGMEA; Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited and Janata Bank Limited.
