Woman overcomes poverty through farming

When Belal Mia suddenly passed away in 2003, Madhu Begum, his wife, had no clue how she would fend for herself and her four children.

Belal, who was the sole bread earner of the family, had been making both ends meet by working in a field and developing a mini nursery on a 10 decimal plot of land. But with his demise, Madhu’s only support system was gone for ever.

But this woman from Bhupatipur village in Jhenidah Sadar Upazila did not give up and faced all the challenges head on to turn the wheels of her fortune. Her only weapons in this battle for survival were her grit and determination.

Madhu, who earns aboout Tk 4 lakh a year at present, started her journey towards economic prosperity by planting papaya plants on the land lying unused in her home. With the proceeds of the cultivated papaya, Madhu bought 40 decimals of land from which she is now earning Tk. 25,000 per month.

In addition, Madhu has also taken up fish farming and in her mini pond. She is also milking three cows in her cattle farm. Vermi-compost,  earthworms produced from cowdung, banana wastage and water hyacinth are fetching her some additional money.

Talking to The Independent, Madhu said an activist of Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), Razia Khatun, came forward and offered her one kilogram of earthworms free of cost. The worms are helping her expand her vermi-compost business. She added that she married off her three daughters with her earnings and is also running the family smoothly.

Madhu said every woman can take care of her family with their hard work and determination.
