RU to hand over ‘Bara Kuthi’ to cultural ministry amid protest

Rajshahi University authorities on Saturday decided to hand the historic building ‘Bara Kuthi’, the first administration building of the university, over to the ministry of cultural affairs amid protests of the university teachers. The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting of the university, held at the vice chancellor’s office with VC Professor M Abdus Sobhan in the chair. The building ‘Bara Kuthi’, established by Dutch businessmen around three hundred years back, is now being used as the Club of Assistant Office Employee of RU. Professor Abdul Alim quoting the VC said that the ministry of cultural affairs issued a gazette last year stating that the ministry, in accordance with the Antiquities (Amendment) Ordinance, 1976, will preserve Bara Khuti as historical heritage.
