Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza hinted on Saturday that he might retire from international cricket after the tour to Sri Lanka, the country where he had ended his T20 international career in 2017. Earlier, Mashrafe maintained that the 50-over flagship event in England would be his last appearance on the big stage. “I wish to play cricket, which is why I’m playing. I don’t know whether I’ll play two or five more matches. But I may retire from international cricket in Sri Lanka. I’m just saying,” Mashrafe recently told Cricfrenzy, a cricket-based web portal in Bangladesh. “I felt like retiring from Twenty20 cricket in Sri Lanka.
That’s why I would like retire from there. I don’t think any declaration is required here,” he said. He, however, added: “I’m not interested in talking about retirement at the moment.” The captain predicted if he declares his retirement, it may affect the performance of other players and the team as well. “Well, this is my last world cup. But I’ll not retire after this tournament. I don’t want to think about the thing right now,” the 35-year-old veteran said.
“The tournament is still going on. The announcement of my retirement can be harmful. People tend to be emotional at such moments,” he also said.
“But, if the board wants, I have to think about that,” he added.
Among former Bangladesh stars, only Khaled Mahmud Sujon and Mohammad Rafique ended their international career by making a pre-scheduled announcement from the field. Former medium pace all-rounder Sujon Mahmud took his ODI retirement from a match against Sri Lanka in Bogura in 2006. And Rafique called it a day following a Test match against South Africa in Chattogram in 2007.
Former captain Minhajul Abedin Nannu retired after the 1999 World Cup, but he wanted to stage a comeback after Bangladesh was granted their Test status in 2000. But the BCB did not grant him the chance. Instead, he had to retire after a domestic match in 2005.
Akram Khan had to announce his retirement from Grand Azad Hotel following a disappointing tour in South Africa in 2003, while Aminul Islam Bulbul, Bangladesh’s first captain in a world cup, did not officially announce his retirement. Khaled Mashud conveyed the BCB about his decision to retire through a letter in 2008.
