43 containers fall in the Bay due to rough weather

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

A Pangaon-bound import-laden cargo vessel from the Chattogram port lost 43 containers into the Bay of Bengal near the Hatiya Channel due to rough sea waters yesterday. Every day, over 150 container vessels and oil tankers carry goods from the Chattogram port to Pangaon using the route. The ‘KSL Gladiator’ of Karim Shipping Lines was carrying 83 containers amounting to 147 TUEs (twenty equivalent units). The incident took place at 8:30am while the vessel was crossing the Hatiya Channel in Noakhali.

However, Karim Shipping Lines and the Chattogram Port could not confirm what types of goods were inside the containers. SM Shah Alam, director of Karim Shipping Lines, told The Independent: “Owing to the heavy swelling of the sea, the vessel started rolling and 43 containers fell into the Bay of Bengal.”

“Since morning, no vessel moved through the route due to the roughw aters. So, we can't confirm whether the lost containers would create any problem for any moving vessels.

However, we have cautioned vessels passing through this route,” said Mohammad Selim, deputy director of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BITWA) in Chattogram.

“A BIWTA vessel, Dhruv Tara, set sail around 3pm to the accident spot for marking the area of danger for other vessels.

The containers were floating near the shore at Bhashanchar near the Hatiya Channel. We are monitoring the situation,” he also said.

“The ship owners are responsible for rescuing the containers. If they fail, the BIWTA will float a tender to retrieve them,” he added.
