Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim yesterday urged the officials concerned of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) to intensify their monitoring system on following the build codes while construction of houses in the capital.
“We don’t want to keep a single house beyond law. But we cannot do it overnight,” he told a ‘meet the reporters’ programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the capital. The minister said there are 500-year old buildings in old Dhaka. “If we want to demolish the buildings overnight, it will be not possible,” he added.
Rezaul said the citizens also will have to be conscious to follow the building codes to avoid any disastrous incident. He said in new Dhaka, many buildings are being constructed without following building codes.
“We will demolish those buildings which have been constructed without following any kind of rule,” he said. DRU President Elias Hossain presided over the function while its General Secretary Kabir Ahmed Khan conducted it.
