DoE for stern action against environment pollution

Department of Environment (DoE) would take stern action against the people and organisations who are involved in environmental pollution. DoE Director General Dr AKM Rafique Ahammed said this at a “Workshop on Media’s cooperation in DoE’s Enforcement Activities” at DoE headquarters on Saturday. “DoE would take stern action, especially against polythene and black smoke released by vehicles and others, and none would get any kind of mercy for this offence,” he said. Rafique, however, said financial penalty or fine is not the ideal solution to environmental pollution, rather it would be possible by creating mass awareness of the problem. He also expressed his concern over the garbage dumping in Amin Bazar on the outskirts of the capital, saying that the garbage would pollute the rivers around the dumping site in rainy season.

“The wastage dumping landfill would pollute the river seriously as it could be washed away and get mixed with water,” Rafique noted. The DoE director general urged the media to pay more attention and coverage to the garbage disposal.

Thousands of city dwellers of Amin Bazar landfill area have been suffering from serious environment pollution for long. The DoE served several notices to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) but it doesn’t take any measures in this connection, according to the workshop.

The city produces more than 5,000 metric tonnes of wastage per day whereas DNCC produces 3,500 metric tonnes. There are two wastage landfills in city’s Amin Bazar and Matuail. DoE Director (Monitoring and Enforcement) Rubina Ferdoushi presented the keynote paper on Bangladesh environment reserve law, rules, environment court law and updates on enforcement and future plan at the workshop.
