6.46 lakh people live in Dhaka slums: Minister

Local Government Division Minister Tajul Islam yesterday said some 6.46 lakh people live in 3,394 slums in the capital. Responding to a tabled written question of ruling Awami League MP Haji M Salim, the minister said that there are 1,639 slums in Dhaka North City Corporation area where 4,99,011 people live.

The number of slums is 1,755 slums in Dhaka South City Corporation area where 1,47,056 people live. Quoting slum census of 2014, he said that there are 135,340 households in DNCC and 40, 591 in DSCC. He said the government is implementing various projects to improve the living standard and primary health care of the poor people living in the slums.
